Pétanque lessons in Bryant Park

As the Pétanque season warms up in New York City, Bryant Park is alive once again to the sounds of clacking boule and cheers of triumph. The newly laid lawn is now finished and almost ready to sit upon and most of the laying of new pipes under the paving stones etc is complete. The park is reborn. For those that don't know, pétanque lesson are given throughout the week from 11:00 - 6:00. There is, at nearly any given time, people playing pétanque in the park. A constant flow at all times, games played, people coming and going, smiles and handshakes. All are welcome and all feel welcomed. A serene haven in the hustle a bustle of Manhattan. So if you have some time to spare, stop by and throw some boules around. Get to know how this little corner of a park can be a home away from home or an arena of gladiators.....

Brooklyn Boule is now an official FPUSA Pétanque club.

It has been a long time in the making but now with the support of the Federation of Petanque USA and the other New York clubs, we have come together to to give rise to a new pétanque club in North Brooklyn. In doing so we hope to broaden the wealth of players and the love for the game.....
The club, as of this posting, is still young, with a modest group of dedicated players, with varied skills and playing abilities. We are encouraging players to come and join from all boroughs, no matter what your Pétanque experience is, from novice to pro, there is always room for more.
Strength in numbers is our goal at the moment. As the sun has started to finally show it's winter-worn face, we will be starting our scheduled meeting times and organizing games. For anyone wanting to become a new member and support the rebirth of Brooklyn Boule please email us at Brooklyn Boule.

Fall update... 2010

This past weekend was a sight to see in McCarren Park, Pétanque pandemonium. As all the available courts in Manhattan are now off limits, across the river they come. Washington Square Park is far from being completed as promised and I would estimate not being so until at least Spring 2011. Bryant Park has turned it's self into a Christmas consumer strip-mall, engulfing the courts, so as to cram as many mini boutiques as possible; Christmas comes early in Manhattan....
As the Pétanque season wraps up here in New York, more and more players are being introduced to the benefits and proximity of McCarren Park (one stop on the L train and surrounded by bars). So as long as the weather remains warm, head to North Brooklyn and see some fine free range Pétanque and enjoy a post game beverage.....

(LBNY's last tournament of the year will be held at the Prospect Park courts courtesy of NYPC, this sunday at 10.00am)

Since I haven't updated for a long time I thought it best to do so.

McCarren Park has undergone some changes over the last year or so. The one thing that affected pétanque play the most was the closing off of the area behind the Parks Department building on the North end of the park. Is was the space the avid volleyballers swarmed to every weekend, from sun-up to sun-set, these guys are serious about their game. But the park decided to close it off, for well over a year. In doing so left the volleyballers without an arena and forced then to find other spots, namely 'ours'.

Hard enough as it is with the overcrowding of Williamsburg and sheer volume of people playing every game under the sun, it made it near impossible to play on Sunday afternoons. A week or so ago they took the fences down, from the old volleyball courts. So, we'll see if they head back or not.

Wednesday nights this year have been mainly wet and miserable. But it is still the best time to play in the park, cool and lit in the warm summer months ahead.

The Parks/Dept have turned on Spotlight 4 which gives more light and they've planted a few more trees around for good measure.

I have met, heard from and played with many Pétanquers over the years that want to play or have played in McCarren Park. Yet the commitment needed to establish a regular schedule is still lacking. The whole North Brooklyn "Green" space is changing, due to massive east river development, now is the time to unite for the greater good of a community. Only together, as lovers of the game, can we establish a permanent, undisturbed and respected site to play on.

The Message Board feature has been removed from this Blog as unfortunately it was not a successful as I'd hoped. I always thought the Recycle-a-boule was a great idea, but without regular users, it becomes a ghost-town. (If there a desire for this continue I will bring it back, or if someone is selling a set or pétanque related items on ebay or craigslist, I can list them here..)

As for the Blog it self, I may see if attaching it to Facebook works as far as linking the updates to friends-of Brooklyn-Boules walls. This may inform and hopefully entertain, at speed most are used to. I would like to continue updating and posting, so the more feedback and support the Blog gets, the more it will be kept active.

"I apologize if I have neglected this Blog and broken promises of updates and postings of all things pétanque. Since this Blogs inception there have been many others that have followed suit, and now somewhat overshadow, this small one-armed-bandit of a plea for committed players.

I have worked hard to make the site as useful and creative as I could, to promote pétanque, in Brooklyn and afar. In doing so, it has changed my life; The people I have met and the games I have played. The technical skills I have discovered whilst creating the graphic and film elements of the Blog has enriched my artistry and Adobe© deciphering. All of the fresh air I have inhaled as a result of being outside, battling the weather and stray balls in McCarren park. The support that I and the Blog have gotten over the years has been phenomenal. I have been enriched through the game of pétanque and the people that play it. Young and old, the curiosity for the game draws a diverse crowd worldwide.

I was never that fond of 'sports' and wasn't even aware that pétanque was one until I started promoting it in Brooklyn, Game being different from a Sport. Yet as my knowledge grew I became more aware of harmony within the duality. The friendly, casual and social game, can, with or without an umpire, be respectfully approached in the context of a focused challenge. Hunt the point, shoot the coch, eye-ball that triangulation of who is closer, a good firm handshake and abide by the etiquette of a scholar. Which ever way you view and play pétanque, it never ceases to be rewarding.

For the past two years I have been working on a exciting Pétanque project that will, when it's finished, be a wonderful addition to the pétanque community worldwide. This 'project' has caused me to neglecting the Blog of a time but I'm hoping to add to the evolution and contemporary approach of the wonderful thing that is Pétanque. I will be previewing all our endeavors as soon a available. Meanwhile please participate when you visit the Blog, sign the guest book, brows through the posts, comment and share your thoughts.

I wish also to give a personal thanks to; Laura (my wife and giver of my first set of boule), Nick (the man that reignited the fire), Mark (my boulebotherforever), Benedict (my true brother,

As you can see in the video, NYPC all worked very hard and hands on to create a beautiful space, reminiscent of the communal spaces found all over France. Who are these people that sell Pétanque sets at ridiculous prices? Is the world that greedy? And if Neiman Marcus was selling sets of Pétanque boule in the 60's why not now? Is it not retro or chichi enough? Why is it that crap supersedes quality? Imitation is not the finest form of flattery, it's fraud! All I can add is; thank the heavens Philippe from Pétanque America is here, á la mode, to outfit all with shinny balls, at a reasonable price.

(Although whom ever's selling them did do their homework with a nice write up and I do like the yellow case, but that's beside the point! And 8, why not 12? There's more than enough room, at least get the numbers right. 12 crap balls are better than 8 crap balls.I know they do that in France too, sell vacation sets, by why, why, why!!!)

SPRING TIME....

As hard as it is to believe Spring is here in Brooklyn. The sun is shining and the Oaks are budding. Having been incarcerated by the rain for the past few months it is finally time for the 2009 Pétanque season in New York. Yesterday we stopped by the Pistes in McCarren Park to see how the surface was and much to our pleasant surprise two new trees have been planted next to the the old Oaks. The whole park has been dotted by newly planted trees. Fortunately for us, one tree is in a perfect spot to ward off soccer players from the North out field. As we shared a game, under the setting sun, another couple turned out with a shinny new set of Boule, and played tandem on the other piste. More and more players are popping up in North Brooklyn and finding solace beneath the Oaks.

So come, join the fun.
Wednesday Nights will be commencing, if the weather allows.
Sundays will be a flexible free for all, turn up and watch out for incoming projectiles!!!

New Year New York Update.....

Well, well, well....things are afoot in New York. I was going to write a bit about the goings on that are occurring in the New York Pétanque scene, but now I realize that it has been well documented and even adultered in tabloid slander. Who knew that that there was so much drama?..... But rest assured, Brooklyn Boule has no comment as to the internal goings on of a fine and successful club such as is the LBNY. So I shall keep to the point and try to provide useful information and not idol chitchat... For change is good and changes there are...

Pétanque America's blog has posted a very informative article on the new Brooklyn club 'NYPC' (New York Pétanque Club). So you can read all the information and hoohar there. PA-BLOG. (Thanks Philippe). The more Pétanque playing in Brooklyn the better, (if only we could get some up north, but that's another story.)

Washington Square. If you have seen or been a member of LBNY you know that the have been two fine Pistes in Washington Square for over 40 years I believe. These were the original proving grounds for pétanque in New York. So the park is in the middle of a make over, post Giuliani's "Pot Vending" clean up. The new park will hold one large organic shaped piste that will supposedly support three or four games at a time. Although at the weekends this will be a 'LBNY members only' piste, it will be available throughout the week to non-members. Since it takes time to do anything in New York the there will be no pétanque in Washington Square until sometime after June 2009. More reason to come to Brooklyn. Bryant Park, lovely Bryant Park. Last year I spent many an hour there, playing and coaching. Meeting all the regulars and making new friends. This is the place to play Pétanque in the city, a sublime oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle. After joining LBNY last year to participate in the club, I found solice in the fact that there were so many people playing pétanque in Manhattan, and with such diversity. I hope to be teaching there this summer as apart of the parks department pétanque development program and LBNY. So if your in Manhattan stop by for a cold Latte and a game. Bryant Park site.

Bastille Day. Many of you have asked about the Bastille day tournament on Smith Street in Brooklyn. From the little information I have gleaned from hear-say, it seems that it's in question whether or not it will actually take place this year. I don't want to speculate as I don't know the complexities of it, so I'll leave it to unravel and will update as soon as I know exactly what's going on. I do know that the sheer genius and madness that is the Smith Street Tournament, will be missed by many, if indeed it does not take place in Brooklyn. There are possibilities that Manhattan may host one, as in past years, and there are always the LBNY 'Open' tournaments that are held every year. If you do want to play in the Bastille Day events, where ever they maybe, please join La Boule New Yorkaise as this is the only sure way to secure a slot, not to mention all the other benefits of belonging to the finest pétanque club in America.

And Brooklyn Boule's still here, after the parting of my fellow compadre, Mark, things seemed bleak in North Brooklyn. But 'this' year, as with the birth of a new Brooklyn section of LBNY, and the shrinking space of places to play in Manhattan, maybe this will draw more players to McCarren Park, so they can see for them selves that it's not too far from Manhattan and it is rather pleasant under the oaks in the summer time, day or night. The turkey's nest but a few paces away, the French bistro FADA a few blocks away, the park is surrounded by places to eat and drink. The variety of creative craziness that happens in that not-so-little park in North Brooklyn is a sight to be seen in it's self. Pétanque is there, modest and true....

To celebrate this favorite of American Holidays, what's better than our own Balloon in the Macy's parade in New York City. Soaring high above the awe struck, freezing crowd. Reminding those, that play here and around the chillier parts of the Northern hemisphere, how it's far to cold to play and that spring is a long way off. Yet inspiring us to embrace the game and not let our Boules rust over the frigid months ahead. And as Black Friday approaches it's that time of year to write out your Holiday gift wishes , with of course Pétanque Boules being to of the list...... EUROPEAN TOUR 2008

WHITSTABLE, BRIGHTON, LONDON, MASSERET, CONQUES">

Brooklyn Boule lands on foreign soil and goes in search of places to play pétanque. Although not really a pilgrimage nor a extensive cataloging of the best of the best, these are some of the places we visited and enjoyed a game or two.

ENGLAND

WHITSTABLE.

Whitstble, Kent, is a lovely little sea side fishing town filled with small boutiques and seafood eateries. Famous for it's Oysters and cult celebrities such as Peter Cushing and The Cray Twins, there's a Pub for every ilk. One such Public House is the East Kent, on Oxford Street. A typical English Pub, yet with the French twist of having two Pétanque pistes in the garden. With pints of ale and Extra Boules to play, this was a great spot for an early afternoon game to start off the European adventure.

BRIGHTON

Brighton, East Sussex, many of you may know as the Coney Island of England and home to the Brighton & Hove Pétanque Club. Although bad planning on my behalf lead me not to meet up with the club, I did see their pistes and threw a few boule abound. An absolutely fantastic site for Pétanque, right on the beach. They have three exclusive areas where they play and the two I saw were pristine and well looked after. I couldn't help but drool over these large areas enclosed by small walls and overlooking the sea and the elegant Brighton piers. Some day I'll have to go back and get in a few games.

LONDON

London town, Cleaver Square, Kennington. The south London Mecca for pétanque players. Having heard for this spot for years I was looking forward to meeting up with some old friends and Hot club Pétanque's J-C Nowers, who organizes the games there. Cleaver Square is not your typical London square, being a central garden park. Surrounded by Georgian terraces, it's open, tree-lined and graveled. The Prince of Wales pub in one corner allows for outside drinking and the use of it's facilities. A fine time was had until the sun set and we all headed of in search of latenight food. Many thanks to all those that showed up at such little notice and to Ed for being such a gentleman.

FRANCE

MASSERET

So to France and our first stop was the small village of Masseret. Located just south of Limoges atop a high peek with a 360º view of the area around it. Beneath the Rapunzel-like tower built over the sight of an ancient chateau, is Masseret's "Boulodrome". 15 out door pistes and 2 huge indoor areas inside the Boulodrome itself. Although we missed the monthly tournament I did manage to get inside and gasp in awe at the size and location of this fantastic establishment. Of all the places we went in Europe, this was the finest. We played in the early morning before setting off again, enthralled that such a tiny picturesque place could have a perfect, year round space to play Pétanque.

CONQUES

And finally to Conques, the village I grew up in and our family home away from home for over 30 years. This is where I watched and learned how to play pétanque, from the old and young of the village. To play pétanque here as an adult, having honed my playing skill in New York, is an amazing grounding in my past and connection to the locals and the rich culture of the Central Massif. Unfortunately the piste that I once new has long since gone and a school was built on the site, now the local club has a spot and the end of of the tourist car park. But they have a club hut/bar and throughout the summer every Tuesday night they have a doubles tournament. Playing three games and prizes awarded by wins, not points. One win = Pâté, two wins = Pâté and wine. One for each player. And we didn't come off too bad, two bottles of wine and lots of pâté for the two competitions we played in...... On Sundays they have their practice games, where you play for free and engage in a little healthy tourist-free competition. An amazing trip, and well worth hauling our boules across the Atlantic, being ready and willing for any playable surface we could find. Being back in Brooklyn we a glad that we have somewhere local to play and realize that a Pétanque continues to catch on in the US, such things as Boulodromes and prizes = Pâté, could be just around the corner.

Bastille Day Debauchery......

It taken me a while to get over last weekends Warm Boule, Weak Ricard and Hyperhidrosis. As much fun as the Bar Tabac Tournament is every year, it's pure madness. An orgy of enthusiastic competitiveness as seen in the dog pits around the world...... Game on! Fast, furious and cutthroat. Piratesque chaos, seemingly ruleless mobs of three, swashbuckling their way into the next round, sporting their colors and cunningly scheming their opponents demise. Each of the 80 pistes should come with a keg of rum, as the lines to the bar were far too long and the only way to approach such insanity is in the vane of Hunter.S. Thompson meets Errol Flynn. Start the intoxication early and keep an eye out for large bats flying the Jolly Roger.

All that being said, a big thank you to all involved in making it happen. A lot of time and effort goes into this production, it should be a show on Broadway. Although it started late due to the fact that only one Cement truck full of sand showed up and had to go back for more. Ernesto, of LBNY, did a fine job of making the event go as smoothly as possible.

Since last years national televised upset between Brooklyn Boule and Xavier, Bernard and Gill's team.(LINK) Where there was a disupte about the Cochonnet being out or in. A fundamental rule as been issued concerning the Cochonnet and the Piste barriers. If the Cochonnet hits the barriers at any time in play it's rebound will be left as good and not out. Only if the Cochonnet leaves the Piste does this count as out. This ruling has been, most flatteringly, dubbed "Tristram's Law" by La Boule New Yorkaise and the founders of the Bastille Day Tournament. Such a trouble maker am I. And believe me this rule cause no end of confusion and frustration for all players.

As if the laws of physics and pirate tactics weren't enough to contented with, this year; the "all mighty Pétanque player in the clouds", deemed it nessasary to once again turn on the improbability drive and match us up AGAIN with Xavier, Bernard and Gill! In the same court!!! A surreal occurrence that left us all a bit dumbfounded. But it wasn't until the Cochonnet defied "Tristram's Law" by going underneath the back board and was half in and half out; that left me feeling there was some very odd intervention going on here, "oh crap, not again!!!" Yugve was called to give the call, and it was declared "in". Although they had the chance to knock the back board on the opposite side to make the Cochonnet "out", being gentlemen let it go and played on, beating us 13/1. At leased we didn't get Fannyed. As they went on to win the whole tournament. Good for them, they are the best after all..... and like playing with sand.

So there you are another year, another crazy hot Sunday in Brooklyn. We'll be back next year!!

For the Bar Tabac Bastille Day Tournament on the 13 th July 2008.
Your best bet is signing up at Bar Tabac or at Tout Va Bien in person. These are, as far as I know, the only "open" places for unaffiliated LBNY or Brooklyn Boule club members. Slots are scarce, so put your name and cash down ASAP.It's first come first served.( I believe it's $35.00 per team, but I could be wrong.) Please call these restaurants first, to make appointments, as they are very busy this time of year, and respect their time and patience. Brooklyn Boule has our honored place in the tournament so keep an eye out for us and cheer us on..... If you or anyone else misses out on this year you can join Brooklyn Boule or LBNY, to play in next years Bastille day Tournament and all season long, with membership to either of these local clubs.

Ah, a wonderful night. Perfectly cool as the sky turned pink, it's still light at 8.00, but the lights are on and the games a foot. Ernesto, Christophe, Hugh, Mark and Tony, exiting stage left, found his way to McCarren park. A merry bunch of men, jousting at triples. Proud Ernesto, having come second in the Hery Cup, made a superb carreau, that left his ball bouncing on the spot, like a ping pong ball. And bought us the news that our place has been secured for the Bar Tabac Bastille Day Tournament. Fun Fun Fun..... Thanks to all that came out and a big warm welcome to Tony, may we see you soon..... Here are some pics from my cell phone that are rather terrible but it's all I had.

Wenesday Night Presidential Showdown..

Coming back from my trip with a costly cancellation and layover in Chicago, I was eager to get out and play some Pétanque with familiar faces. To my wonderment and joy, Christophe (ex-president LBNY) called, whilst I was purchasing pétanque refreshments, and said he was in town and that there would be a full house in Brooklyn that evening.(About bloody time...) So at 8.00, new rake in had, (it's huge!) I headed off to McCarren Park to find Mark, Bruce (LBNY not Brooklyn) and Ernesto (President LBNY) warming up on the spot lit piste. After a while and some catch up gossip, Christophe and Hugh turned up to even out the numbers for a game of triples. Although most of us were a little rusty and beer soaked, some wonderful plays were made and it's always nice to see twelve balls in play in the park. So a fond welcome back Christophe and I hope to see you all back in the park next Wednesday night, as now the evenings are the only bearable time to be out side anyway.

We will never travel American Airlines again!!!!! #@%+&*#@^!!!!!...but I shan't go into that.

On a brighter note we had a fine time in Minneapolis, and the highlight of that was visiting the Minneapolis Petanque Club. We were welcomed with open arms, as Don and Don introduced us to their piste. A lovely spot on the edge of Beltrami Park home to half a dozen unused Bocce courts; Which was a surprisingly pleasant surface to play on, although with the resent rain and the underlying clay, made it easy to pock mark. A few more Minnesotan club members turned up and laura stepped out to be replaced by her bother Matt (future Bruce in the making). So we had enough time for one game of triples, then Matt and I took on the Don's for two games of doubles. And fun was had by all on that humid day between threats of tornadoes and intence thunder storms.Don Holzschuh was kind enough to give us all Club caps and as Brooklyn Boule has yet to produce theirs, A bottle of RICARD was offered in return. So many thanks to you Don and fellow Mid-West Boulistes, for showing us a good time and warm welcom. We shall be back..........

I read your frustration on being all alone on a splendid Wed night.
Indeed, what a shame. Shouldn't be: not in May, and not when I know we ship
boules to Brooklyn on a regular basis, and there's nowhere else to play in NY at night!

I'll make another post on our blog. But I'd recommend that, right on the top of your blog you clearly mention in BIG letters the play times on Wed & Sun. Right now, they sort of slid down on the right. Better yet, have a small permanent post, say dated Dec 31, that always stays on top. Like I've done for our Carolina Open. And then I'll email all the people in Brooklyn we shipped boules to over the last 18 months, with a link to your blog.

Don't give up!!

Again I apologise for my previous post but I don't believe that "Jeppy" is the only one who reads the Brooklyn Boule Blog.......

On another note;
As we all know, it is inexcusable to forget to bring a Cochonnet with you when you set out for a nice game of Petanque. Unfortunately though it does happen, and more times than I'd like. Standing on the Piste with Boules in hand, it is hard to turn around and hike back home in search of your missing target. So the improvisation kicks in and alternatives are reached for. In the past we have successfully used a discarded Coke bottle cap, being red and roughly the right size, not to mention that our park is well used and a little unkempt, they're not too hard to find. But last Sunday, we we're in that unforgiving circumstance. Yet there was not a Coke cap to be found, remarkably. So we scoured the grounds in search of "something" that we could use. Then at last I found, on the grass, a wrapped Starlight Mint, neglected or lost, all on it's lonesome. So, in a very humorous and some times frustrating way, we used the little stripy candy as a Cochonnet. So from that I was wondering what other, if any, substitutions have been made by players in the same situation. Please feel free to send me or leave a comment on the object that became Cochonnets, because all you wanted to do is play Petanque, and walking or driving home, was not an option.

If I may, I have a gripe or two.......

I'm not to sure whether it's the weather or the "What ever!" but Wednesday's turn out was terrible. Sometimes I wonder why I bother.. A beautiful Wednesday night and no one was around???? I don't get it, there is room for so much more. two playable Pistes in the newly enhanced stadium lights. Yet no players ventured into Brooklyn. It's the first stop on the (L) train into Brooklyn and it's the least like Brooklyn, part of Brooklyn. It's like going to the west Village for "Boule's" sake!!! Why Why Why... You Petanque Players, Why aren't you taking advantage of what we have nurtured? Washington Square is in the middle of being remodeled and manicured, Bryant Park is like playing in a parking lot, something happens, amongst the horse manure, in Central Park and yet nobody bothers to come to Brooklyn. I'm happy to be playing with any Bruce that walks along and joins in, but there are " supposedly" hundreds of Petanque players in the New York area, where are they? Not to mention that it is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Brooklyn Boule's number one Bruce (Mark) is moving to Pittsburgh in July. Does this mark the end of Brooklyn Boule? Well hopefully not but with the recent turn-out being the way it is, who knows. How the "Boule" can I form a club when everyone keeps flip flapping over where they want to play? I'm Sorry to complain and whine but I just want to bring this to the table........break bread and share the "wine"!!!

And so...... I shall be saluting my dear friend Bruce (Mark), as he ventures off to other climes, and with his strength and support continue with Brooklyn Boule as best I can. A great petanque player, vigilant student and a very best friend. You will be missed by many, yet stay warm in out hearts forever.....Boule on Brother.

A Gray Sunday

Gray, gray, gray....Sunday. We were out in the odd Brooklyn Mist, playing on the dry pistes under the oaks, amazing how rain can return to the earth and not interfere in our Sunday playing. Kick Ball season "kicked" off this afternoon as the crazies came out of hibernation. But it's always nice to have mayhem around when we play as long as it's far enough away and doesn't distract us from our game play. Playing Petanque under the freshly pruned Oaks really does situate you right in the heart of McCarren park and all the goings on there. Luckily they didn't mulch the piste this past earth day, although the did try to reseed, but that ain't gonna happen. Trees may grow in Brooklyn but grass don't! Hooray for us!!! But the sun will come out and the festivities will commence. Come and join in the fun, the more players the better as we now have two very playable pistes and the Park is ours.............. Boule on comrades!!!!!

Thursday Night Lessons in Physics......

A lovely warm Spring evening drew us out to bask, in the now, super bright stadium lights of McCarren Park and enjoy a few games of Petanque. As we often bring out extra sets of Bolues to use as targets it is always handy when passers-by wish to join in; and last night was a fine example of just of just that. A boisterous bunch of local lads, eager to comprehend what the hell we we're doing with the metal balls, asked if the could play. So after a brief lesson in petanque etiquette, we played an interesting game of triples with jovial smiles abound. Then as the night wore on and the boys left of prior engagements another couple of likely players ambled by and stopped to watch. So, as before, we educated them on the rules and game play. It is truly amazing how quickly can fall in love with Petanque and pick it up so naturally, after and initial warm up and an quick lesson in physics. Thanks to all that stopped by an we hope to see you again soon..........

FPUSA MEMERSHIP & BOULE PISTES

Brooklyn Boule is this year, attempting to gather enough memberships to apply for the Federation of Petanque of the United States of America. To do this we need committed players, in Brooklyn or any of the five Boroughs, to join Brooklyn Boule and see that it becomes a world wide recognised club. The affiliation with the FPUSA will not only allow us to play Internationally but also have the support and security of a governing body of Petanque in America.

There have been "discussions" about uniting New York Petanque players from all the satellite clubs of the central "La Boule New Yorkaise", amalgamating all New York petanque clubs under one umbrella, thus making inter-borough games more available and bringing together, yet still keeping their individuality's and uniqueness. But alas until this happens we must do what we can to play as much Petanque as possible and shake the hands of all that we meet.

Brooklyn Pistes:

I have found a site in McCarren park, where I think would be a perfect place to have, Brooklyn's first public Pistes, made. Hopefully these ideas will find their way to the parks department and we can get to work on making this dream a reality. There is an tree-lined stretch of land just between the tennis courts and the Automotive High School, that is rarely used by anyone. It is nicely tucked away from the onslaught of flying projectiles that we are bombarded with under the oaks. Yet still very much a part of the park. And what with the growth and pending clean up of Berry Street, this little niche has the potential of being a very popular spot for Petanque players from all over the city. Please feel free to comment with your suggestions and help support the endeavor......

A dark and moist evening kicked off the new season of Wednesday Night Petanque in McCarren Park. For some reason the Stadium lights were off, and only the warm glow of the path lights lit our way. Yet resourceful and up for a terrain challenge, as petanque players are, we found a spot on one of the Baseball diamonds and played comfortably on in to the night. Much to our delight, Ernesto, Hugh and Hakim from La Boule New Yorkaise Tunneled their way over from Manhattan. So Bruce, Bruce and our good friend Ricard enjoyed an odd numbered game of three against two, as Ricard cheered on from the Batters Bench. As the night wore on a fine mist of rain encouraged the sand to cling to our boules, dampen our cigarettes and Ricard disappeared, so we all headed for dryer ground to wet out whistles at the Turkey's Nest. Thanks for coming over Guys and I hope that more players will be tempted to Brooklyn for "Free Range Petanque playing".........

Ah, Yes..... Spring is finally in the air, kites in the Oaks, frizbees flying and Petanque in the Park! All the creaking bones are finally being to thaw out and and the Boule are rolling as the season of out-door-loveliness commences. We had a wonderful afternoon as players gathered under the yet-to-bud Oaks. Smiles and rusty Petanque playing was accompanied by kids yelling, bats hitting and soccer balls kicked in so many directons that we should all be waring helmets..... As brief as it is, I do love the Spring in New York!!!

Another Fantastically French way to while away the winter woes and get drunk at the same time. I have yet to find more information on this French Board Game, roughly based, as far as I can tell, on Pétanque. I pulled this off an ebay.fr sale and translated it (badly) via Bable Fish. This was the statement:

Play Aperitif game of bowls

The alcohol abuse is dangerous for health - to consume with moderation.

Play drank: One plays with the rules of game of bowls. You must position your glass more close possible stopper to have the point. One plays as much as one does not have me not.
It is necessary to compose 2 teams of 1 A 3 players.
To point, the white die ert throws advances your glass on the box indicated by the die in the column of your choice.
If while pointing, the course of your glass meets glass dÃ©ja played, your glass takes the box and other glass positions on the box of front.
To draw throws the red die and enleve all glasses, whatever the column, on the boxes which carry the number indicated by the die and poses your glass on one of these boxes. The players whose glasses left the play, drink their glass.
When all glasses were played, one counts the gaining points, each gaining glass sees gratifier of an amount of aperitif moreover.

This play contains:
- 1 plate
- 1 bill-poster of score
- 2 dice
- 6 glasses

Attention the alcohol abuse is dangerous for health

Forgetting about the Superbowl, the sunshine beaconed us to the Oaks for a spot of winter Pétanque

Bruce's New Acorn rake, worked wonders on the heavily seeded Piste an add a touch of Zen serenity to the park.

Assisting with the circle drawing, Lilly brought a smile to every game :).

Just like playing on the moon, with gravity.......craters everywhere and a little soggy too boot! But it was still wonderful to be out at the Park again albeit a little rusty.

So far this year, few games have been played upon the sodden earth under the oaks. Yet we aspire to have this year be a superb one for Pétanque playing in Brooklyn. The invitation is still open for anyone interested in participating in games or just coming to watch. Wednesday Nights and Sunday Afternoons.

As heard on the vague Pétanque grape-vine, it seems that the Pistes in Washington Square are closing down for re-modeling. It will be a great loss to all players to see those go, but rest assured that we welcome any refugees from the sinking Isle. I'll try and update as more information comes to light.

Bruce, Bruce and Bruce, braved the brisk Brooklyn breeze, for our Wednesday eve deflowering of Bruce's new Match 120's.

Although our nuts froze to the size of all the acorns over the piste, we played a fine game under the, still green, oaks. Micheal surprised us with his new Petanque America purchase. His bright and shiny Boule made for fine target practice, yet he came through in the end by winning the game and going home proud as punch!! Good on ya Bruce!!

New York Open 2007 Bryant Park- Bruces, Shelias and Frank!

Here is a small montage of footage I took in between games. Being as there was little time it's quite brief, by I wanted to put it up and pay respects to those that played and the organizers of the tournament. So here's to Bruce, Bruce, Sheila and Sheila, not to mention of course, all the other players, a few you may recognize on the film; and last but not least Frank, it wouldn't be New York with out you!

Petanque on American Television?

Who would have thought that Petanque would make it to American cable TV, but it's true. At the Bastille Day Tournament in Brooklyn this year (2007) a few guys from SNY came down to film and see what all the fuss was about for their new show, "Street Games". Many of you (if you were there) may remember the cameras rolling and the interviewing that went on. Even Bruce and I were interviewed whilst waiting for the games to start. So there is a chance that we'll be on it in all our Brooklyn Boule splendor.... But never the less it'll be interesting to see how "they" portray our beloved sport. If you subscribe to New York cable/satellite, (which unfortunately I don't) you can watch the 15 minute slot that Petanque in Brooklyn has finally got. Or ( as I will do) you can watch it online on their web site: "Street Games"
I will post it, as soon as I find it, for all to see......... and lets hope that there is more publicity and professional footage of Petanque in America.

Pictures for the New York Open. Brooklyn Boule cross the river yet again and test their skills against the New Yorkaise and other fine Players from near and far. A fine sunny weekend for Pentanque, beneath the skyscrapers and surrounded by trees. 32 teams of doubles, enjoyed two full days of intense playing, shaking hands, sharing stories and finishing off the day at the park bar for endless rounds of refreshing drinks. Hats off to all that played, and may we meet again soon......

Manhattan Petanque Tournament Today!

This weekend is the 2007 New York Open in Bryant Park. Please come along to watch and support some of the best players in America as they play around the great lawn in Manhattan's most cosmopolitan public park. Games will start at 10.00am today and go on through the day, then resume on Sunday for the finals. Many thanks in advance to La boule New Yorkaise for hosting and good luck to all the players.

Brooklyn Boule has two teams representing, Tristram and Mark (The Bruces); and Laura and Michelle (The Sheilas). Keep an eye out for them and cheer them on!!

Looks like a nicely done game with realistic graphics. Check out the Petanque Computer Game post for the update. Let us know if you've played the game, there seems to be some free downloads out there for a PC (torrents etc. (watch out of viruses!)) but as a Mac owner I'm out of luck....

FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS

This is unpetanque related, but a parody of poor communication skills, that English speakers are so often confronted by. As well as being filmed in McGolrick Park, Greenpoint, Brooklyn; which is just north of McCarren Park. We have played there a few times but it's not that suited to Petanque now that they reseeded the grass areas. But a nice park to visit. So enjoy this with a pinch of salt and a glass of fine bordeaux.

Proudly sporting my new shirt from Hot Club Petanque , Sunday's gathering of Brooklyn Boule was a fine display of what McCarren's pistes has to offer. A beautiful day under the Oaks, two simultaneous games, one of double and one singles. Then rounding off the afternoon with mixed Triples, as the Ladies joined in to intimidate the Bruces. Ah ....La Vie Petanque!

Ah.....yes, Boule under the the stadium lights of McCarren Park. Friendly faces and warm hand shakes. Ernesto and Clay return for a game of doubles, and we play until the lights go out at 11:00, shot into darkness with a blink. A very pleasant way to spend and evening.....

(It is actually much lighter in the park than the pictures show, it's just hard to capture with out the flash interrupting play and not enough strength to light up the whole park.)

Now that School has Started, the kiddies are away being educated by America's Finest Education System and the heat of a new York Summer is waining, it leaves us more time for Petanque. So to the to the dirt we go leaving our mark under the Oaks.

Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons will soon be our regular schedule in the park. So please feel free to come by. We always carry extra sets just in case anyone wants to join in.

Petanque Computer Games.....

For all you kids (and adults) out there that have been asking about Petanque computer games. I have made this posting to show whats out there. These first two are online flash games that you can play for free and are a fun way to while away the rainy days when outdoor Petanque is a wash out. They are in French so it may take a bit of practice and traslation to get the hang of them but they're fun once you do. There are PC games that you can buy and I shall try to get some review info on them, but I don't think anyone I know has any. So please feel free to review these for others and post your comments.....

Back in Brooklyn.....

Back in Brooklyn, after many Bruce's summer vacations away from the oaks. On a nice coolish Wednesday eve, Bruce and I welcomed Clay to the Oaks , whom we met and played against in the Madagascar Open this year. To our amusement we played, with "Raiders of the lost Ark" screening in the back ground, McCarren Pool overflowing with people having just heard some concert, Kids, curiously wanting to play and seemingly enjoying throwing steel balls around, (Ah to be 7 again). And the strange popping of balloons just near us, coming from a form of post concert fall-out, that I shan't go into: ( lots of young hipsters smiling, lets just say). It was nice to be back to the oddities that Our park has to offer. and play boule under the lights until they fizzle out at 11.00, if only Nº 4 stadium light would work we'd have perfect light all night. I shall work on the Parks Department to get that turned on. Cross you fingers. As we were using the smaller Piste that needs a bit of "Round-Up©" and less badly pitched softballs flying at us. Ah Brooklyn..... I'm not looking forward to all the acorns falling, they hurt.

Soon we will be officially making Wednesday night and Sunday afternoon our playing times. And the Brooklyn Boule will be doing a special recruitment day, with food and goodies sometime this September. In the mean while we are still looking for people to play to increase our numbers, so if you'd like to play please get in touch and let us know when you'd like to meet up.

Minneapolis Mulch....

A trip to Minneapolis found us pisteless in the pristine suburban out skirts, lots of astro-turf like lawns and too many lakes to count. Not a patch of dirt any where. In an attempt to recruit another "Bruce", we tried our best to compromise and headed for the nearest playground. And clearing away the top layers of woodchip mulch stuff we actually had a somewhat, playable surface. Although I wouldn't recommend it, it is true that petanque can be played "almost" anywhere.

If only we had more time we would've liked to meet up with the Minneapolis club and shoot some boule around, Mid-West Style, maybe next time........

More Rain.....But We Got In A Game!

Having tentatively planed a Summer-Boule-Get-Together, on Sunday, the weather forecast foresaw many a gray cloud heading our way, so with the humidity soring we called it off , but by late morning the rain hadn't come so we dashed out and managed to get a few games in before the first drops hit the Oak leaves. So we will be having a Brooklyn Boule get together in a few weeks, when the crazy weather returns to normalish. Stay tuned for more updates...
